The way to find your how-to

How to close or minimise full screen metro apps in Windows 8

It looks like with Windows 8 Microsoft decided to completely change the way of closing or minimising applications. They called it “new experience” but we will see what users say. Don’t even try to find the top bar with minimise, maximise or close window buttons. It simply doesn’t exist.

How to close the apps then?

Well, it looks like there is only one way to close application- using Task Manager. Windows 8 uses new “smart” technique which suspends applications it thinks are not being use. After a while it kills them to free up the resources (memory, CPU etc).

How to minimise the apps or run another one?

There are few ways to do that:

  1. If you use a device with touch screen you can touch the top edge of the screen by your finger and slide it all way down. This should minimise the application.
  2. If you don’t use touchscreen but have mouse, do the same. Move the mouse cursor to the top edge of the screen (mouse cursor should change to the hand icon) then click and drag the window to the bottom of the screen.

  3. You can use “magic keys combination” and kill the app. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE -> click Task Manager -> select application you want to close -> and then press End task button at the bottom right.

  4. By chance I have found that pressing “WIN” button on the keyboard will minimise the application as well.
  5. Same thing will do the CTRL+ESC combination.
  6. Another way to "escape" from full screen up is to move the mouse to the right-top or right-bottom corner of the screen. This will give you a menu bar where you can select Start menu and run another application.

  7. If you like to start the application you have used last time, move the mouse to left-top or left-bottom corner of the screen. The small window will pop up. Click it to run this app.

  8. I have noticed that some apps allow you to close them by pressing ALT+F4 combination but I’m sure Microsoft will block that option soon.
